Journalister som gjorde skillnad

NEW YORK Lyssnade precis på ett intressant inslag som sändes i Publicerat den 2 november, om hur medierna (och Gunnar Myrdal) från 1950-talet och framåt allt tydligare synliggjorde rasismen i USA:s sydstater och om hur journalisternas närvaro var en förutsättning för medborgarrättsrörelsen.
Detta apropå den två år gamla boken "The Race Beat; The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation", som jag inte läst men antagligen borde skaffa genast.

This is the story of how America awakened to its race problem, of how a nation that longed for unity after World War II came instead to see, hear, and learn about the shocking indignities and injustices of racial segregation in the South—and the brutality used to enforce it.
It is the story of how the nation’s press, after decades of ignoring the problem, came to recognize the importance of the civil rights struggle and turn it into the most significant domestic news event of the twentieth century.

Det är sådana böcker man bör läsa ibland för att bli påmind om vad journalistik kan handla om, och som vaccinering mot infall om att göra enklare och mer lönsamma saker.

Jag har heller inte läst Myrdals bok "An American Dilemma", men det borde jag verkligen också! Och så borde jag förstås se filmen "Mississippi brinner". Jag har enormt mycket kvar att lära om USA och amerikansk historia.
